Why can't I log into messenger?

yahoo messenger worked up until about a week ago...now every time I try to log in a window pops up saying.....application failed to initialze properly with a bunch of numbers and letters following...I'm not a computer whiz {in fact kinda computer illiterate} and just don't know what to do..any suggestions?
