Why are some constellations only visable from a particular hemisphere ?

I believe that some constellations are visable in both northern and southern hemisphere, but that others are not. I get the impression from the skymaps site, that what you can see also depends on the month. Can someone explain to me, why what you see depends on where you are and when you are looking ?
